UPDATEDx2: Not Breaking: Brian Williams Reveals Mitt Romney Is Clueless

Think Progress has posted an excerpt from Mitt's interview with Brian Williams, where Romney reveals his thoughts on gun control and the fact that he does not know what he is talking about:

Mitt Romney revealed that he is unfamiliar with the details of the largest mass shooting in American history, during an interview with NBC’s Brian Williams.[...]

ROMNEY: Well this person shouldn’t have had any kind of weapons and bombs and other devices and it was illegal for him to have many of those things already. But he had them. And so we can sometimes hope that just changing the law will make all bad things go away. It won’t. Changing the heart of the American people may well be what’s essential, to improve the lots of the American people.

In fact, 24-year-old Holmes legally purchased every firearm, bullet, and piece of tactical gear that he used for the attack, according to local law enforcement. He bought most of it over the Internet. Mentally ill people are barred from purchasing firearms, but Holmes had no previous record of illness, and would not have been flagged in a background check.

UPDATE: In an interview with NBC's Brian Williams, the presumptive Republican nominee pointed to the fact that James E. Holmes, the suspect in last Friday's shooting, was "building bombs"—even though it was illegal.[...]

"A lot of what this young man did was clearly against the law," Romney told NBC. "But the fact that it was against the law did not prevent it from happening."

Asked if he had a "problem" with individuals being able to purchase large amounts of ammunition via the internet, Romney said he didn't think it was possible to "prevent people who want to provide harm from being able to purchase things to carry out that harm."

"What I wanna do is find the people who represent a danger to America and find them and keep them from having the capacity to use or buy things that could… hurt other people," Romney said.

Romney said that while he supports the NRA, he does not agree with the organization in every instance. He did not identify an area in which he disagreed with the NRA.

"Their agenda is not entirely identical with my own," Romney said. "I don't know if I line up 100 percent with… almost anybody."

WASHINGTON (AP) — The politics of guns leapt to the top of the presidential race Wednesday, as President Barack Obama embraced some degree of control of weapons sales and Republican Mitt Romney seemed to suggest an alleged mass killer in Colorado had obtained his weapons illegally even though he hadn't.[...]

The president called for stepped-up background checks for people who want to buy guns and restrictions to keep mentally unbalanced individuals from buying weapons. He said those steps "shouldn't be controversial, they should be common sense."

Romney, meanwhile, said many of the weapons deployed by the shooting suspect in Colorado were possessed illegally and that changing laws wouldn't prevent gun-related tragedies. His comments added a confusing layer to the debate because authorities say the firearms that James Holmes allegedly used to kill 12 people were obtained legally.

While we're on the subject of Mitt and cluelessness...

One senior British colleague used an anecdote from a rare corporate gathering at his Massachusetts home at the end of the 1980s which he claims summed up Mr Romney’s character and management style.

“One of our wives was sick – she had been pregnant and the delivery had not gone well,” said the executive. “She had serious issues. Simultaneously, another wife of one of our colleagues had cancer.

“As the wife of the first man was leaving the house, she was struggling,” the former colleague recalled. “Mitt turned to her and said: ‘Buck up – you could be like her,’ pointing to the second woman.”
